Political newcomer Burt Jones won the Republican primary seat in the Tuesday. At press time, Jones held a commanding lead over Grant and was all but assured an outright win in the race to determine who would face Democrat Darrell Black in the November general election.
Jones, a Butts County insurance agency owner and former Georgia Bulldog, carried six of the nine counties in Georgia’s 25th Senate District, according to the Georgia Secretary of State’s website.
Grant received more than twice as many votes in Baldwin County as did Jones and he also carried slight leads in the portions of Bibb and Jones counties that are part of the district. The wins were not enough to hold off Jones’ wins in Walton, Morgan, Greene, Putnam, Jasper and Butts counties.
“I want to thank all my supporters out there, all the voters in the entire district,” Jones said. “We knew it was going to be a tough task. Some people said we wouldn't be able to do it but we were able to push through. I appreciate all the help and support in all the counties. We look forward to November when we try to take this seat.”
