Thursday, Aug. 29 M&K Tree Service removed a diseased tree estimated at more than 150 years old from the front of Central State Hospital’s Powell Building.
Wylene Worthen and Audra Butler are pictured near the gigantic trunk. It took the crew five days from beginning to end of removal.
Jessica Dearman watched the entire process from her office window.
"It was very interesting to watch them remove the tree. They didn’t use any boom trucks during the removal, instead they used something to shoot the ropes up in the tree and the owner of the company climbed the tree everyday using harnesses and ropes cutting limb by limb," Dearman said. "They somehow cut a hole in the center of the tree since it was so big around and placed a jack in it to make sure it landed in a safe direction. When the tree hit the ground, it made a tremendous noise and shook the Powell Building."
