Read Across America Day celebrates the importance of books

MILLEDGEVILLE —

Local students will join millions of their peers across the country to celebrate the 16th annual National Education Association's (NEA) Read Across America Day Monday, March 3.

The Ina Dillard Russell Library at Georgia College joins the annual reading awareness and motivational program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on Dr. Seuss' birthday.

"Read Across America is an event the schools look forward to every year because it brings community members and college students to the schools to read Dr. Seuss books to classes," said Jessica Choice, the site services director for Communities in Schools. "The readers have taken time out of their day to come to the schools, and our goal is to make sure all activities run smoothly and on schedule."

Volunteers will read to children at the university library and at local schools during this all-day event.

"Read Across America Day is important to me because, I think we can broadcast a message to the students that reading can be fun and important in many ways," said Gordon Thomas, archival associate for Special Collections at the Georgia College Library. "I'll be reading to Ms. Evans' first graders at Eagle Ridge Elementary. I had such a good experience last year that I immediately signed up again this year."

For more information on the Read Across America Day celebration at Georgia College, contact Jenny Harris 445-1275 or Logan Herren 445-0997.
