Tax preparer advises taxpayers to do their research

MILLEDGEVILLE — Freedom Tax Service is helping individuals, families and businesses organize their financial records and prepare their taxes before the 2013 income tax filing deadline.

Business owner Ron Summers has been preparing taxes since 1994 as a trained tax preparer. He said taxpayers should be careful with who they choose to prepare their tax statements and avoid those who may be “juicing” tax returns.

“A lot of tax preparers will add things on illegally that the client does not know about in order to increase their clients’ refund and increase the preparer’s fees. Before you sign anything, make sure you look at your actual return,” Summers advised. “In this economy, most people have a full-time job and a secondary job to offset their income. The IRS doesn’t care how you make your money as long as you report it correctly.”

Freedom Tax Service offers all income tax-related services year-round.

“For people who are self-employed with a legitimate business, we can reconstruct their business and educate them on how to keep proper records,” he said. “If you want a good, solid record next year, you have to have documentation; I can’t stress that enough.”

The Milledgeville office opened in December at 1820 N. Columbia St. in the Plaza North shopping center in front of the old Winn Dixie. The company has several other locations throughout the southeast, including Dublin, Eastman, Warner Robins and Fort Valley.

“Every year we open a new office in a different city. We would like to expand to neighboring cities like Sandersville and Eatonton,” Summers said. “This year has not gone as good as I wanted but it’s done well enough for us to establish a foothold. We plan to continue our business in Milledgeville, which has been very good to us.”

The deadline to file Federal Income Tax Returns and tax extension requests is Tuesday, April 15 for tax year 2013.
