Regional unemployment sees rate minimal dip

MILLEDGEVILLE — The regional unemployment rate decreased in February, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.

The unemployment rate for Middle Georgia stands at 7.6 percent as of February, according to Georgia Department of Labor statistics, down two-tenths of a percentage from the month prior. January’s unemployment rate was 7.8 percent.

The rate was 8.9 percent in February a year ago.

The Middle Georgia Region includes Baldwin, Bibb, Crawford, Houston, Jones, Monroe, Pulaski, Peach, Putnam, Twiggs and Wilkinson counties.

According to the labor department the rate declined because there were 519, or 24.1 percent, fewer new layoffs, represented by initial claims for unemployment insurance. There were 1,632 new claims for unemployment insurance filed in February, down from 2,151 in January. Most of the decline in claims came in trade, transportation and warehousing, administrative and support services, construction, and accommodations and food services. There were 1,598 claims in February 2013.

Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for February was 7.1 percent, down from 7.3 percent in January. The rate was 8.5 percent in February a year ago.

There were 40,322 new claims for unemployment insurance filed statewide in February, a drop of 17,769, or 30.6 percent, from 58,091 in January. Most of the decline in claims came in manufacturing, trade, transportation and warehousing, administrative and support services, and accommodations and food service. There were 38,696 claims in February 2013.

Elsewhere in Georgia, metro Athens had the lowest jobless rate among metro areas at 5.1 percent. The Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest rate at 9.7 percent.

Local area unemployment data are not seasonally adjusted.
