From staff reports
A flood warning is in effect for Baldwin and surrounding areas near the Oconee River. The National Weather Service has issued the warning through Tuesday evening.
Recent heavy rains caused runoff into streams and the Oconee in Baldwin, Washington and Wilkinson counties, resulting in rising river levels.
As of 9:45 a.m. Monday the river stage was 18.4 feet and rising, according to the National Weather Service. Flood stage is 27 feet.
The river is expected to rise above flood stage by late Monday afternoon and continue to rise to nearly 28.8 feet after midnight. The river is expected to fall below flood stage by Tuesday afternoon.
Specific areas included in the warning include Fishing Creek and Tanyard Branch Stream (between East Thomas and East Charleston streets).
Due to the rains, the Oconee River Greenway is closed until further notice.
