UR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Prestwood’s confidence never waivers

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Prestwood boys bring effort to John Milledge Academy’s Trojan Center.

Freshman Andrew Prestwood and his junior brother Amos are contributing pieces to the 13-win JMA boys’ basketball team.

The freshman has a knack for scoring. His 25-point night against Pinewood earned Prestwood his second Athlete of the Week honor.

JMA head basketball coach Thomas Craig said it’s easy to forget that Prestwood is a ninth-grader.

“He’s a very vocal kid, and Andrew knows he has to lead by example,” the Trojan coach said. “He’s doing a good job of that.”

At this point of the season, the talented Trojan has more than 400 points averaging just more than 17 points-per-game.

“I still don’t think he is shooting enough,” Craig joked.

Opposing defenses know the name by now. Prestwood deals with more defensive pressure nightly.

Even on a slow day, the Athlete of the Week isn’t scared of the big shot.

Craig said he’s probably never coached a young kid that believed this much.

“The kid’s court awareness and basketball IQ is out of the roof for a ninth-grader,” he said. “Sometimes I think he’s a junior or a senior out there.”

In JMA’s most recent game as of presstime, Prestwood turned on the scoring when needed.

The Trojans defeated Bulloch by five points in Tuesday’s GISA 4-AAA Region Tournament opener.

The freshman was dry in the second quarter but stayed with the process.

He was 10-of-10 from the free-throw line and “knocked down some huge shots” in a 22-point effort.

Prestwood leads a quality underclassmen varsity basketball group.

Craig said each game they seem to be learning how to win consistently, doing the little things that turn a result one way or the other.

“We are getting better game by game,” the coach said. “(Prestwood) is as well. I’m pleased with where we are.”
