UR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Prestwood’s confidence never waivers

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Prestwood boys bring effort to John Milledge Academy’s Trojan Center.

Freshman Andrew Prestwood and his junior brother Amos are contributing pieces to the 13-win JMA boys’ basketball team.

The freshman has a knack for scoring. His 25-point night against Pinewood earned Prestwood his second Athlete of the Week honor.

JMA head basketball coach Thomas Craig said it’s easy to forget that Prestwood is a ninth-grader.

“He’s a very vocal kid, and Andrew knows he has to lead by example,” the Trojan coach said. “He’s doing a good job of that.”

At this point of the season, the talented Trojan has more than 400 points averaging just more than 17 points-per-game.

“I still don’t think he is shooting enough,” Craig joked.

Opposing defenses know the name by now. Prestwood deals with more defensive pressure nightly.

Even on a slow day, the Athlete of the Week isn’t scared of the big shot.

Craig said he’s probably never coached a young kid that believed this much.

“The kid’s court awareness and basketball IQ is out of the roof for a ninth-grader,” he said. “Sometimes I think he’s a junior or a senior out there.”

In JMA’s most recent game as of presstime, Prestwood turned on the scoring when needed.

The Trojans defeated Bulloch by five points in Tuesday’s GISA 4-AAA Region Tournament opener.

The freshman was dry in the second quarter but stayed with the process.

He was 10-of-10 from the free-throw line and “knocked down some huge shots” in a 22-point effort.

Prestwood leads a quality underclassmen varsity basketball group.

Craig said each game they seem to be learning how to win consistently, doing the little things that turn a result one way or the other.

“We are getting better game by game,” the coach said. “(Prestwood) is as well. I’m pleased with where we are.”

School staff were evacuated from Midway Elementary School around 1:30 p.m. due to a gas leak from a nearby tap station. Highway 441 South was closed for approximately an hour as Baldwin County Fire Rescue personnel and Southern Natural Gas employees worked to determine the cause of the leak.
