Lockerly Arboretum appoints new director of horticulture

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Lockerly Arboretum Foundation Inc. has appointed Jana Otis as the new director of horticulture at Lockerly.

Otis brings to the position an impressive set of credentials, skills and experience. She received her bachelor of science degree in horticulture, with a business emphasis from Iowa State University, and has worked in the field of horticulture and landscaping for more than 20 years.

Otis is an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist and a certified Georgia Landscape Professional.

From 1991 until 2009, she served as managing horticulturist for Reynolds Plantation. Her wealth of experience will be a tremendous asset to the Lockerly team, and she began work at Lockerly last week.  She will work in collaboration with Lockerly's Executive Director, Jim Garner, in the ongoing redevelopment of the Arboretum.

“We are excited to have someone with Jana's level of talent on our team, and I believe this will be the beginning of a new era for this public garden that has served as a resource for this community for nearly 50 years,” said Garner.

The Arboretum grounds are open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. Visitors are welcome to tour the gardens at their own pace. Private group and educational tours can be scheduled by calling 478-452-2112.

Admission to the arboretum is free of charge and open to the public.
