Local school officials did not want to risk the safety of their employees, students and families during Wednesday’s ice storm warning, so several made the decision to remain closed Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, the ice storm warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday.
The Baldwin County public school system, Georgia Military College Prep School, John Milledge Academy, Sinclair Christian Academy and Putnam County Charter School System extended the closure of schools Thursday. Though Baldwin staff and faculty will resume a normal schedule Friday, Baldwin and Putnam students will return Tuesday due to scheduled holidays on Friday and Monday. GMC and JMA will resume their normal school schedules Friday.
Georgia Military College Junior College canceled morning classes at the Milledgeville campus Thursday. All afternoon and evening classes will resume after 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
As of press time Wednesday, Georgia College and Central Georgia Technical College were still monitoring the forecast and no announcements had been made regarding Thursday's schedule. Faculty, staff, students and parents are encouraged to check their email, school website and Facebook and Twitter pages for the latest information. Alerts of any changes will be sent through their school’s emergency notification system.
The Twin Lakes Library System will also remain closed Thursday. The Baldwin County Courthouse and City Hall are expected to re-open at noon Thursday.
For Milledgeville, the National Weather Service predicts a chance of snow and sleet before noon Thursday, then a slight chance of rain between noon and 1 p.m. It will be partly sunny, with a high near 41 degrees. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch is possible.
Going into Thursday night, the forecast calls for mostly clear skies with west wind 5 to 10 mph, becoming light after midnight.
Friday’s forecast is partly sunny with a high near 54 degrees. A chance of showers is expected between 8 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday.
