UPDATE: Storm knocks out power to about 200,000 in Ga.

ATLANTA — Georgia utility companies report that nearly 200,000 customers were without power as ice coated trees and branches are bringing power lines down across the state.

Georgia Power reported that nearly 120,000 of its customers were still without power early Wednesday afternoon, but crews have been able to restore power to customers who lost it during the early hours of the storm.

More than 71,000 of those still without power were in metro Atlanta. Another 29,000 customers were in eastern Georgia. Others were scattered elsewhere in the state.

Georgia's electric membership cooperatives (EMCs) said more than 60,000 customers were without power early Wednesday afternoon. Among the hardest-hit of the 41 cooperatives was the Coweta-Fayette EMC, where more than 12,000 customers in eight Georgia counties were without power around 1 p.m. Wednesday.
