Cold, icy weather close schools

MILLEDGEVILLE —

Tuesday night’s predicted mix of sleet and potential snow resulted in the closure of several local schools Wednesday.

Baldwin County public schools, Georgia Military College Prep School, John Milledge Academy and Sinclair Christian Academy are closed Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm warning remains in effect through 7 a.m. Wednesday across much of central Georgia.

Georgia College closed all of its campuses, including events and activities at each location, at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday due to the weather threat. As of press time Tuesday, a decision regarding Wednesday's schedule had not been announced. Georgia College officials said Tuesday that they planed to provide updates prior to commuting time Wednesday morning.

Central Georgia Technical College officials decided to close all of its campuses and centers for all faculty, staff and students, including special events, Tuesday. As of press time, CGTC officials had not made a decision regarding Wednesday's delays or cancellations as they were still reviewing weather information. Updates on campus and center closures will be made via email, the college website and Facebook and Twitter pages.

The Putnam County Charter School System released students early Tuesday, and a decision about school Wednesday was not made by press time Tuesday. Updates will be posted to the school system’s website.

As of press time Tuesday, all of the local schools were still monitoring the forecast and no announcements had been made regarding Thursday’s schedule. Faculty, staff, students and parents are encouraged to check their e-mail, school website and Facebook and Twitter pages for the latest information. Alerts of any changes will be sent through their school’s emergency notification system.

The National Weather Service predicts a wintery mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain, with accumulations of 1 to 3 inches of snow and sleet.
