Belk to hold mammogram screenings

MILLEDGEVILLE — The BelkGives on the Go Mobile Mammography Center is scheduled to visit the Belk store located in the Milledgeville Mall for free mammogram screenings.

The event is slated from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the mall location on North Columbia Street.

This is the first time the mobile mammography center has come to Milledgeville, according to local store manager J.R. Ernst.

"If it's successful we will definitely look into scheduling another day for the mobile unit to return to our area," he said.

The unit is a 39 foot long, state-of-the-art screening center that is scheduled to make stops at Belk stores in Centerville, Milledgeville and Macon.

To participate in the screening, women must be 40 years of age or older, have no new breast concerns such as breast lumps or breast skin changes, have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months and have a primary care physician who is able to accept the results.

Results are handled confidentially, and the patient and the physician will receive a report in the mail.

All screenings are performed by licensed, female mammography-certified technologists with Charlotte Radiology.

This service is free, with or without insurance. Insurance will be filed by workers on site and any co-pays or deductibles will be covered by Belk. If the patient has no insurance, Belk will cover the complete cost of the mammogram.

"It's a great service to the community and a very unique one. You don't usually think of Belk when you think of mammogram screenings," Ernst said.

The service is another example of different ways in which Belk tries to reach out to small communities like Milledgeville, he added.

"One of the great things about working for a company like Belk is witnessing how much they give back to their customers," Ernst said.

Belk has committed $6 million to the Mobile Mammography program, as noted in a release, and has brought testing and awareness to women for 248 days in 2013.

After receiving their mammogram, women can visit the Intimate Apparel area of the store to receive complimentary bra fittings.

Space for the event is limited, but there's still time to make an appointment.

"We're still taking appointments and we encourage anyone in the community who's interested to make one right away."

To schedule an appointment, call 1-855-655-BMMC (2662) and follow the instructions.
