MPD investigating downtown robbery

MILLEDGEVILLE — Milledgeville police are investigating a strong armed robbery that occurred Friday in the downtown area.

According to the incident report, at about 1:42 a.m., police were called to the area of West Hancock Street in regards to a woman being threatened and robbed.

"The female said she was walking home when she was approached from behind by a black male," said Det. Anthony Henderson of the Milledgeville Police Department.

According to police, the victim was walking on West Hancock heading home to the Bellamy Apartments complex when a tall, slender man ran up from behind her and snatched her purse. The victim said the suspect was wearing a white shirt and blue jeans.

Henderson said the woman continued to hold onto the purse and was dragged by the suspect for about five feet.

"The suspect did threaten her, but he never brandished a firearm nor did he use any weapons," he added.

During the robbery, the man told the victim that if she didn't let go he would hurt her.

"He threatened to punch her in the face if she didn't let go of the pocketbook," Henderson said.

After a brief struggle, the man got the purse and ran down West Hancock Street.

Henderson strongly urged residents to walk with another person or a group whenever possible, particularly in the downtown area.

Being visible in a group helps deter criminals, he added.

"At night, criminals typically target individuals that are alone, especially women," he said.

Police are working on tracking down leads that could possibly help identify the subject.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Henderson at 478-414-4079.
