Library welcomes sci-fi author

MILLEDGEVILLE —

The Twin Lakes Library System will host a book signing with contemporary sci-fi author Alex Hughes as part of the Summer Reading Club program.

Hughes will be signing and selling copies of her books from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Local History Room of the Mary Vinson Memorial Library, Tuesday, June 10.

Savannah native Alexandra Hughes is no stranger to Milledgeville.

She was one of the featured authors in the Georgia Literary Festival in November 2013.

Hughes is the author of the award-winning Mindspace Investigation series.

"We invited Hughes back to Milledgeville and to be part of the Summer Reading Club because the themes she works with fit in really well with the programs that we have planned for June at the library," said Sarah Hamil, outreach coordinator.

This year's theme is “Fizz, Boom, Read”, “Spark a Reaction” and “Literary Elements”, all centered on elements of science.

Scheduled adult events for the Summer Reading Club includes sci-fi themed Film Fridays.

"We're doing a casual sci-fi book/movie club every Friday in June where we'll read a book and show the film version of the book, and discuss the similarities and differences."

Hamil says Hughes also commented on how much she enjoyed her stay in Milledgeville during the festival and expressed her wishes to come back and interact with the people of the community.

"It's nice for others to hear how her writing career began from her love of books," she said.

Her love of sci-fi began when her grandfather handed her a copy of Anne McCaffrey's ‘Dragonrider’ series at the age of eight. From then, Hughes developed a genuine interest in the genre.

Hughes is a graduate of the prestigious Odyssey Writing Workshop and a semi-finalist in the 2011 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards. Her short pieces are published in several markets including Every Day Fiction and White Cat Magazine. She blogs about writing craft, revision and editing at SmallTriumphs.com.
