JMA girls win in OT, boys fall to Westminster

MILLEDGEVILLE — The region kickoff ended differently for the John Milledge Academy varsity basketball teams.

The Trojan boys (7-3) lost to Westminster 52-44, and the girls (5-5) overcame the Wildcats in overtime 30-25.

Junior Kelsey Chambers scored 17 Trojan points with seven of those in the extra time.

JMA girls’ head coach Natasha Gainous said the team played great team defense Tuesday led by senior Kate Giddens.

“We held their post player, who has dominated us in the past, to five points,” Gainous said. “They just did a good job.”

The Trojan girls kicked the turnover bug at the Trojan Center during overtime. They never lost a possession.

JMA won the offensive rebound battle 20 to 10 Tuesday night. Overall, the Trojan girls out-rebounded Westminster 33 to 25 in the victory.

“That was huge for us,” Gainous said. “It was a much needed. We needed that confidence.”

On the male side, JMA couldn’t make the key defensive stops, according to head coach Thomas Craig.

“We couldn’t get it closer than four points,” he said. “It’s a tough loss. That’s probably one of the best teams we’ve played all year besides Stratford.”

The Trojan boys played a 2-3 zone defense against the Wildcat but struggled to slow down two big post bodies.

Craig said his group didn’t box out well the first quarter but picked it up later in the contest.

“We just couldn’t get that one stop and convert,” the Trojan coach said.

Westminster stayed on the foul line during the fourth quarter, icing the win.

Freshman Andrew Prestwood led all Trojans with 15 points followed by senior Brandon Panfil’s nine points and junior Amos Prestwood with eight points.

The boys are back in action at Bethesda Friday and then at Tattnall Saturday.

Craig said these out of region games are against great teams.

“My guys will be focused. I don’t have to worry about that,” he said. “We’ll roll the ball out and play.”

The Bethesda boys’ only game begins at 6 p.m., while Saturday’s Macon doubleheader starts with the girls at 4:30 p.m.
