Democratic Caucus opportunities Saturday

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Baldwin County Democratic Committee will hold caucus elections Saturday morning at Walter B. Williams Park.

Party Chairman Quentin T. Howell said most registered voters might not be aware of an official elected Democratic Baldwin County body.

“They represent the Democratic voters in the state of Georgia,” Howell said. “We had 12 positions per district, but now in our last meeting we had to up our numbers from 12 to 15. Our committee is starting to bust at the seams.”

Committee members participate in state convention meetings among other things.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. Saturday.

It's open to voters who consider themselves Democrats.

“This is really the grassroots way to represent their communities. It doesn't cost a dime, just the time they want to put in,” Howell said.

Latonya Howell said the caucus starts promptly at 10 a.m.

“Anyone to be considered for membership has to arrive by then,” she said.

If interested, bring proper identification. Elected posts coincide with the five Baldwin County voting districts.

Latonya said the Democratic committee works with the central and state coalition.

“Baldwin County is an integral part of that,” Latonya said. “Becoming a member would give them headway.”

The group welcomes all interested Democratic individuals.

The committee helps the local community year round. Food and clothing drives are a major part of the efforts.

“We concentrate on a lot of non-political stuff giving back to the community,” Howell said. “That surprises people. That's where our heart is.”

Howell said the state Democratic energy would hopefully parlay into a large caucus this Saturday.
