Attempted robbery at Dollar General

MILLEDGEVILLE — Police are investigating an attempted robbery caught on tape Sunday night at a local Dollar General store.

Around 10:30 p.m. Milledgeville police units were called out to an alarm at Dollar General on North Columbia Street. A man was attempting to remove a safe from the store.

The incident was recorded on store video surveillance.

According to Maj. Reginald Hill, MPD criminal investigations commander, a vehicle was seen pulling up in front of the store, followed by a man entering the front doors.

The image on the surveillance appeared to have been of a full-sized dark colored vehicle, possibly a Dodge, according to law enforcement officials.

“Once he entered the store, he immediately went to the safe behind the register and attempted to remove it,” Hill said.

The movements of the safe triggered the store alarm system, which caused the unidentified man to run out of the store.

Hill and Det. Anthony Henderson both agree that the robbery may point to someone who had prior knowledge of the location of the safe.

“It’s clear on the video that he had general knowledge of the setup of the store and where the safe was located,” Henderson said.

At one point, the individual tried to conceal his face with a T-shirt as if he knew the placement of the video cameras.

“It’s an unusual case,” said Hill. “Robberies are very rarely attempted so early in the night, especially so soon after the store closed.”

No items were taken from the store, and no one was hurt in the incident.

Police are asking anyone who recognizes or knows of information regarding the individual in the surveillance image to call the MPD Tip Line at 478-414-4413.
