African-American journalist and antilynching crusader Ida B. Wells was born on this day the daughter of slaves at Holly Springs, Miss., and grew up as Jim Crow and lynching were becoming prevalent. Wells traveled extensively, founding anti-lynching societies and black women’s clubs. Wells’s Red Record (1895) was one of the first accounts of lynchings in the South.
The Milledgeville Chapter of the UGA Alumni Association invites all UGA alumni and fans to a Freshman Send-Off on Sunday, July 27, from 5-7:30 p.m. at the home of Jimmy (BBA ’64) and Elizabeth (EDS ’76, EDD ’86) Youngblood, 255 Corral Road in Milledgeville.
