Morning Update Weekend Edition

MILLEDGEVILLE — Good morning. Here’s a look at what’s happening today.





Weather: 





Mostly sunny. Highs around 80. South winds 5 to 10 mph shifting to the southwest 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon. Saturday night partly cloudy in the evening then becoming mostly cloudy. Lows in the mid 50s. Light and variable winds. Sunday mostly cloudy with a chance of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs in the lower 80s. Northwest winds 5 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 40 percent. Sunday night partly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Lows in the mid 50s.

On this day:

Today is National Armed Forces Day. President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.

Best bet for today:

The Milledgeville Lions Club, assisted by Milledgeville fire fighters, will conduct its 29th Fishing for Sight fish-a-thon todayfrom 10 a.m. to noon (with a rain date of May 24). Kids five through 13 will compete for trophies at the Baldwin County Recreation Center’s big pond. Live bait, cane poles and a limited number of buckets will be provided.
