Milledgeville Police Department kicks off high visibility enforcement

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Milledgeville Police Department wants to remind motorists to Click It or Ticket.

In order to enforce this reminder, the department will step up enforcement beginning today.

The police department's efforts are part of a larger, national Click It or Ticket mobilization that runs May 19 through June 1. The department is also beginning its H.E.A.T enforcement period on the 19th.

As motorists take to the roads to celebrate the end of school and the approaching vacation season, officers will be looking for not only seat belt and child safety seat violations, but also any unsafe driving behaviors including speeding, DUI, following too closely, failure to yield, and Move Over Law violations.

“Memorial Day weekend kicks off summer vacation season, and we want to ensure that everyone arrives at their destination safe and sound,” said MPD Traffic Sgt. Thomas Smith.

In 2012, 10,335 people who were killed in motor vehicle crashes were not wearing their seat belts.

NHTSA (National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration) data also details how more traffic vehicle deaths occur at night. That same year 61 percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed between 6 p.m. to 5:59 a.m. were not wearing seat belts.

“Many of those deaths could have been prevented if people took the simple step of wearing their seat belt,” Smith said

MPD also wants to remind parents that the department offers a free child safety seat check-up two Saturdays each month.

“Come get your child's car seat checked before you leave for vacation. It's free and only takes about 20 minutes,” Smith said.

The remaining check date for this month is Saturday, May 17 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Anyone having questions regarding the Click It or Ticket mobilization, H.E.A.T initiative, or child car seat checks should contact Smith at 478-414-4000 or at tsmith@milledgevillepd.com.
