DAR to honor Georgia Day at Fort Wilkinson

MILLEDGEVILLE — The local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold a commemorative ceremony this week to mark Georgia’s 280th anniversary.

The annual commemoration of Georgia’s founding on Feb. 12, 1733 dates back to the earliest years of the colony when Gen. James Edward Oglethorpe founded the Colony of Georgia at Yamacraw Bluff, near the present-day Savannah. Although the official day of commemoration is Feb. 12, Georgia Day is often celebrated throughout the week.

Tuesday, cadets from Georgia Military College Prep traveled to Atlanta to mark the historic occasion for the annual proclamation ceremony. Gov. Nathan Deal, along with GMC President Maj. Gen. Peter Boylan (Ret.), members of the GMC Prep eighth grade class, the high school marching band, the GMC junior college color guard and the Regimental Staff of the 134th Corps of Cadets were on hand. According to a press release, in 1976, under the administration of Gov. George D. Busbee, a 1944 graduate of GMC junior college, GMC was invited to perform a ceremony in the statehouse celebrating Georgia Day. Each year since that time GMC has presented an Honor Guard and hosted the ceremony.

Historical reminders of those early days of Georgia’s creation can also be found right here in Baldwin County. In honor of Georgia Day, The Nancy Hart Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will hold a ceremony from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Fort Wilkinson site on Vinson Highway.

“The site is a bronze marker located directly on the shoulder of Vinson Highway,” said Dr. Thierry Deal, a member of the DAR. “The site, which existed before Milledgeville was even founded, is very important to the history of Georgia.”

Fort Wilkinson was established in 1797. Garrisoned by soldiers whose families lived outside the stockade, it was an early trading site where Creek Indians were provided agricultural supplies under the Treaty of New York. It is also where the Treaty of Limits took place between the United States and Creek Nation of Indians June 16, 1802.
