Morning Update, Friday, May 9

MILLEDGEVILLE — Good morning. Here’s a look at what’s happening today.

Weather:

Mostly cloudy. Patchy fog early. Slight chance of showers with isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs in the upper 80s. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 20 percent. Tonight mostly cloudy with a chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms. Areas of fog after midnight. Lows in the mid 60s. Light and variable winds. Chance of rain 30 percent.

On this day:

It’s Military Spouse Appreciation Day. Observed on US military posts worldwide, this day celebrates the strength and patriotism of the spouses of members of the military. Annually on the Friday before Mother’s Day, events are commonly sponsored to recognize the husbands and wives of men and women in uniform for their support, contributions and sacrifices.

Best bet for today:

Georgia Military College will hold a parade today at 2:30 p.m. on Grant Parade in order to honor all mothers for Mother’s Day. Employers are asked to allow mothers of GMC children to take off during that time in order to be present. The speaker will be Penny Hall, senior vice president of BB&T.

Upcoming events:

It’s National Bike Month and the Milledgeville Bicycling Club is celebrating. Bike to Work Week (May 12-16)

During National Bike to Work week (May 12-16), the Bicycling Club of Milledgeville will host a local competition to encourage more riders to use their bicycles for transportation by commuting to work.  BCM will award the top five commuters for the week with a $15 gift certificate for RoadID. The top commuter for the week will also receive a $25 gift certificate to Dough Boys Pizza in downtown Milledgeville.
