Food Depot officially moving into old Winn Dixie

Grocer to add aroun 100 jobs

MILLEDGEVILLE — The former Winn Dixie Marketplace building will house a Food Depot grocery store.

Gerald Taylor, President and CEO of All American Quality Foods doing business as Food Depot, made the official announcement at Milledgeville City Hall Monday.

The building at 1850 N. Columbia St. could reopen by Sept. 1, according to Milledgeville City Manager Barry Jarrett.

The company previously purchased a demolition permit.

“They are preparing their plans right now and should have them to us soon,” Jarrett said. “The city will process them as fast as possible. (Taylor) estimates about four months to do renovations and be set up.”

Food Depot will likely hire as many as 100 employees at the new Milledgeville location.

“We are excited about it,” Jarrett said Monday.

Food Depot is the largest independent grocer in Georgia with 33 stores and counting.

The 56,000 square foot location will include grocery, dairy, frozen food, meat and produce departments.

The store continues to be the only 100 percent Employee Share Option Plan (ESOP; a company owned by its employees) grocery store chain in the nation, according to its website.

Taylor and Raymond Johnson purchased their first supermarket in Stockbridge, formerly known as Kenney’s Market in March 1975.

The Food Depot name and concept arrived on the scene in late 1988. The Conyers store was the first unit converted to the grocer’s standard Cost Plus 10 percent format.

The depot sells groceries at their cost to the shelf and adds 10 percent at the register, showing customers the true price. The percentage pays all grocer expenses such as rent, utilities, equipment cost, payroll, insurance, etc.

From Conyers, the company continued to convert the stores to the “Cost Plus 10 percent concept.”

The grocery chain just celebrated a grand opening for its store in the former Fred’s on Northside Drive in Macon. Other Middle Georgia stores are in Warner Robins, Fort Valley and Dublin, where it also has a distribution center.
