Boys & Girls Club hosts annual Golf Classic

MILLEDGEVILLE — It’s that time of year once again to pick up a golf club and swing into community support.

The Boys & Girls Club of Baldwin and Jones Counties will host its golf classic fundraiser event Saturday, April 26. The event is slated for 9 a.m. at Little Fishing Creek Golf Course and will be a two-man scramble.

“We’ve been doing this fundraiser for a little over 20 years now and it’s one of our better ones to help bring in money for the club,” said Executive Director Paul Bernard.

It’s a win-win opportunity, he added, giving golfers the chance to win cash prizes while benefiting the Boys & Girls club as well.

Entry fee for the golf classic is $50 per person and $100 per team. The entry fee includes green fees, cart, cash awards for first, second and third place per flight, prizes and a served lunch.

“The fees are very reasonable and extremely economical for an 18-hole tournament like this, plus you get a chance to enter other contests too,” he said.

There will also be additional contests held for the longest putt and the closest to the pin. Winners of these two contests will receive a $50 gift certificate from the event’s sponsor, Pickle Barrel Café & Sports Pub. A $10 donation will secure a spot in both competitions.

Last year, the golf classic raised approximately $3,000. All proceeds go to help improve facilities and fund programs for members of the club.

“We’ve been around for about 26 years now, and through grants and community support we really have improved the quality of our facilities, but the quality of programing for our kids is really what has improved the most.”

The Boys & Girls Club of Baldwin and Jones Counties helps kids reach their full potential by providing them with the emotional and material resources needed to help them grow.

According to Bernard, he’s seen thousands of kids grow up and become positive members of the community through the Boys & Girls Club during his years of service.

“Wherever I go in town I always run into an ex-member of the Boys & Girls Club, and they always ask me what they can do to give back to the club that made a difference in their lives,” he said.

In the past three years, the club has received anonymous donations from places such as Dallas, Washington D.C. and St. Louis.

“We’ve been getting a lot of small donations from other places outside the state, which I’m sure is from ex-members who have grown up and moved out into the world,” he said.

Several members of the Boys & Girls club have gone on to colleges and enlisted in various branches of the military, he added.

Another fundraising event similar to the golf classic is the annual spaghetti dinner that the club hosts. By charging $5 per plate, the organization is able to bring in a reasonable amount of money that is much appreciated - and needed.

“We raised about $3,400 from the spaghetti dinner last year. On average it usually brings in about $4,000,” he said.

The Boys & Girls Club relies heavily on the support of the community, and Bernard is thankful for the abundance of support he receives from both elected officials and community residents.

“The City of Milledgeville and the Baldwin County Commissioners are always willing to help us out, and I am so thankful of the support of people turning up at events and donating without any hesitation.”

To enter the golf classic call Kyle Wall at 478-445-0796. The golf classic is open to the first 44 paid teams. All entry forms must be returned by Thursday, April 24. Pick up a form at the Little Fishing Creek Golf Course on Highway 22. Businesses and individuals interested in sponsoring a hole are asked to call Bernard at 478-456-5602.
