Milledgeville-Baldwin County Habitat to host 5K Run and Orange Vest Fest

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Milledgeville-Baldwin County Habitat for Humanity will host the Orange Vest Fest and 5K Run April 26 at the Pecan Orchard at Central State Hospital.

Murali Thirumal, executive director of MBCHFH, said he hopes the event will serve three main purposes: to raise money for the organization, spread awareness for the organization and bring the local community together.

“We value the fact that every penny raised by this event will stay in Baldwin County,” Thirumal said.

To symbolize the function of Habitat for Humanity the event has been named the Orange Vest Fest, and to go along with this theme race participants are encouraged to dress in construction worker-type costumes.

The race is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. and there will also be a festival directly following the end of the race, which will last until noon. Registration fees are $25 for adults and $15 for kids under age 12; this price includes a T-shirt. The festival will involve various activities for all ages, including a relay race, a photo booth, face painting, and several vendors from local restaurants and businesses.

MBCHFH currently works in partnership with families to build at least one house per year and has built 18 homes since 1994. Habitat welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and also serves people in need of decent housing regardless of race or religion. MBCHFH is supported by donations from churches, businesses and individuals along with the proceeds of the resale store, the ReStore. New and gently used items for sale in the ReStore are sold at affordable prices and the proceeds support HFH's mission of eliminating substandard housing throughout Milledgeville and Baldwin County.
