Local Yolkal celebrates one-year anniversary

MILLEDGEVILLE — A local downtown restaurant will mark its first year in business April 19.

The Local Yolkal Café, a downtown restaurant specializing in breakfast, brunch and lunch, will have its one year anniversary.

To help commemorate the anniversary, the restaurant will have special promotions running next week.

“In every roll of silverware there will be a coupon for a different amount off on special food items,” said owner Cliff Charnes.

He added the reason behind the promotion was to say thanks to the residents of Milledgeville who have helped the restaurant be so successful in its first year.

“It may be our birthday but we just wanted to give the actual birthday presents to our loyal customers to say thanks for the support.”

The idea for the business was created by Charnes and his wife Jennifer. A long-time Savannah resident, Charnes and his family fell in love with the area and Lake Sinclair over several vacation trips. After purchasing property on the lake, he and his wife decided to eat at Buffington's one weekend. When looking across the street at the vacant building, an idea was born.

“Every time we came into town we always wanted to go somewhere for breakfast or brunch but there weren't that many choices,” said Charnes. “When I looked over at the available space I thought, why don't we bring that type of restaurant to Milledgeville.”

He said he felt there was a definite need for this type of restaurant in the area and after putting together a business plan, the idea became a reality.

Along with the breakfast classics and upscale ambiance of the restaurant, Local Yolkal has added onto its repertoire in the past year. Recently, they have added alcoholic beverages to the menu.

“We have wine, mimosas and a selection of crafted beers suitable specifically for breakfast entrees,” he said.

The business has also expanded its services to catering as well. Starting at the beginning of the year, Local Yolkal began advertising its catering services.

“The best thing about catering or renting our restaurant is that we close at 2 p.m. and you can have the entire restaurant for your event instead just a section of it like other places do,” he said.

Charnes said the restaurant continues to expand. In recognition of the one year anniversary, a new menu will be introduced that will feature new lunch and breakfast items as well as lower priced favorites.

His hope for the future is to have several Local Yolkals in different locations, creating a franchise.

“We've talked about opening one up in Statesboro and thought about perhaps in Athens too, but nothing is concrete yet.”

He said he feels because of the unique style of the restaurant it is very marketable and can easily turn into a franchise type of business.

“I just want to thank everyone who has stopped in and shown us such warmth and support throughout this first year and I look forward to serving the residents of Milledgeville great food for years to come.”

The Local Yolkal, located at 117 W. Hancock St., is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
