Library hosts lecture by local artist

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Twin Lakes Library System will host a lecture by local artist Dorothy Brown at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

The event will take place in the Anne Moore Children's Theater at Mary Vinson Memorial Library, 151 S. Jefferson St..

The lecture is titled “Windows to Heaven: How to Write Icons.”

It explains the history and practice of religious icon writing.

“Icons do not take the place of deities, they are facilitators in the place of worship,” said Brown in a press release.

Sarah Hamil, outreach coordinator, said she is excited that the library is hosting the event while supporting a local artist.

"Having gotten my bachelor's in fine arts, I am extremely pleased to be hosting an artist lecture at the public library," she said. "Our community is rich in the arts. Between Georgia College, Allied Arts and all of the artists and art historians that live here in Milledgeville, there isn't exactly a shortage of culture."

Brown's lecture was inspired by her studies of icons in Europe during graduate school.

She has been writing icons since the late 1980s. Her large-scale icons are currently on display at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

She has been commissioned to create several icons of patron saints for individuals, including an icon for the Bishop of Durham in England.

A few of Brown's chosen icons are of Christ, Mary, John the Baptist, and the two Archangels, Michael and Gabriel.

"Dorothy's work is awe-inspiring. I encourage anyone who has the slightest interest in art, history, religion or traditional methods of icon making to attend this talk," Hamil said.

The lecture will be an enlightening experience, she added.
