Bodyplex Fitness wins Small Business of the Year award

MILLEDGEVILLE — The owners and staff of a local fitness and wellness facility were honored Saturday as the business community’s top honoree.

Members of the Milledgeville-Baldwin County business community gathered Saturday for the 67th annual Blue Sapphire Gala Awards Dinner and to celebrate nominees and the recipient. The event is held annually by the Milledgeville-Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce.

Bodyplex Fitness was named the 2014 Small Business of the Year. The event was held at the Milledgeville County Club.

This year marked Bodyplex's second consecutive year as a nominee for the prestigious award.

Co-owners Larry Mullis and Dr. Mike Martino, along with general manager and co-owner Adam Shields expressed their appreciation for the honor and discussed their hopes to tackle the issue of childhood obesity in the community.

Each year the local Chamber recognizes a group of Small Business of the Year finalists during its annual awards banquet. Honorees must employ 25 or fewer staffers, exhibit exemplary community service efforts, be in sound business and financial standing, and reflect local entrepreneurial spirit, customer focus and community outreach.

The finalists were vetted by a group of judges selected by the Chamber board who selected this year's award recipient.

This year's nominees also included Fun Factory, Studio Designs Printing and James M. Grant CPA.

In addition to the small business of the year recognition, other awards were given out as well.

In another special presentation on the evening, Baldwin County school board member Lynn Chandler, District 3, received the J. Floyd Harrington Leadership Award.

The Young Professional of the Year award was given to Sara Stone.

Triumph Aerostructures was recognized as the Industry Leader of the Year and the Ambassador of the Year recipient was Colin McCulley.
