GMC set to hold graduation commencement

MILLEDGEVILLE — Georgia Military College faculty and staff are set to honor GMC Prep graduates as well as GMC Junior College cadets.

Members of the GMC Prep School Class of 2014 will graduate on Friday, May 30, beginning at 7 p.m. on Grant Parade.

This year's keynote speaker is Col. Fred Van Horn, executive president of GMC.

Horn has served 33 years of enlisted and commissioned service in the U.S. Army. His military awards include decorations for valor, achievement and service and he is a Purple Heart recipient.

Shortly after retirement, Horn and his family moved to Milledgeville where he became part of the GMC faculty. During his time, he has served as Commandant of Cadets, Dean of Students, Adjunct Professor of Ethics and the GMC Director of Character Education.

The 135th class of GMC Junior College will graduate on Saturday, May 31, at 10:30 a.m. in the Centennial Center on the campus of Georgia College.

The commencement speaker will be Stanley “Stas” C. Preczewski, Ph.D., president of Georgia Gwinnett College. Dr. Preczewski earned a B.S. in engineering at Cornell University in 1980 and concurrently received his Army officer commission.

Upon his retirement as an Army Colonel in May 2006, he began his civilian career as the inaugural Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at Georgia Gwinnett College. He has also served as the Interim President of Georgia College for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

Twenty-two GMC Junior College cadets will receive their commissioning into the U.S. Army as second lieutenants on Saturday, May 31, at 2 p.m. in the Goldstein Center for the Performing Arts.

The commissioning speaker will be Brigadier General Francisco A. Espaillat, Commanding General, 143rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) and alumnus of GMC.
