MILLEDGEVILLE — Milledgeville City Hall celebrated National Bike Month Friday with a proclamation from Mayor Richard Bentley. Bicycling Club of Milledgeville (BCM) members rode up to the building's front steps. Tom Glover, BCM president and Chamber of Commerce Board Member, also presented the city with the official Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community award. The League of American Bicyclists announced Wednesday that Milledgeville is now one of seven Georgia bike friendly communities. The city is formally recognized for its quality bicycling infrastructure, programs and continuing efforts to improve them. Live Healthy Baldwin Director Dr. Jim Lidstone said the bike friendly tag was 106 months in the making. 'It's a great day to be on a bike in Milledgeville. I'm thrilled this day has come,' Lidstone said Friday. He wants the city to become the Bicycle Friendly Community of the south. Executive Director of the Milledgeville-Baldwin County Development Authority Matt Poyner said he was amazed the city earned a bronze level on the first try. He said the awards would make the community more marketable to foreign companies looking for a healthy lifestyle. To join the National Bike Challenge, visit www.mvillebikes.com.
