Bulldogs have strong showing in Old Capital Classic

MILLEDGEVILLE — Continuing the tradition of providing exciting basketball for the Baldwin County-Milledgeville community, the Old Capital Classic did not disappoint as host team Georgia Military Prep School represented well with three wins on Saturday.

Kicking off the tournament, GMC Prep’s girl’s middle school basketball team outplayed First Presbyterian Day School, coming out on top with a 29-9 win to cap of the girl’s season in which they finished at 10-1.

“We had a great game and a great season,” girl’s middle school head coach Julie Brooker said. “That was the fourth game of the week, so it was kind of a hot streak to the end of the season.”

Lady Bulldog Natalie Martin led the team in scoring with 10 in the contest, followed by Kate McGhee with 6 and Cade Bass with 4. A total of seven players scored for GMC Prep against the Lady Vikings.

Capping off the season with a win against one of the school’s biggest rivals in recent years, Brooker is pleased to have gotten the support throughout the season and on Saturday to be able to push the girl’s to such a successful year.

“We really had great support all year,” she said. “Definitely, anytime you can play a rival like that and come out on top, it is a good thing.”

GMC Prep’s boy’s middle school squad continued the momentum with a one-point win over FPD, also capping off their season.

“I thought it was great for them to beat a region team,” boy’s head coach James Lunsford said. “I think the main thing is they’ve gotten better every game.”

Lunsford’s varsity team managed to take down the Business Engineering Science Tech Academy 65-57 in one of two overtime contests on the day, wrapping up a successful day for GMC Prep basketball.
