ORMC welcomes first baby of 2014

MILLEDGEVILLE — It took several hours into the new year, but Milledgeville-Baldwin County welcomed its first 2014 baby Thursday morning at the Oconee Regional Medical Center (ORMC).

Milledgeville residents and proud parents Stephen and Laura Turner embraced their healthy 8 pound, 14 ounce baby boy, Henry, at 7:57 a.m. Thursday. Baby Turner measured 20 1/2 inches long.

“We didn’t plan this day. We planned for 39 weeks, so we expected to have him last week,” Laura said Thursday afternoon. “We figured with it being [Jan. 2], we would not be the first family to have a baby in the New Year. It’s special, and we’re honored to get the attention.”

The Turner family, including grandparents John and Beverly Copeland and Cindy Turner and big brother Wyatt, 4, were anxious to finally head home with their new angel.

“I want to keep him,” Wyatt said sternly, making sure those in the hospital room understood. “He’s mine.”

“I’m just excited and thankful he’s well and everything went smooth,” Beverly said. “This is a wonderful addition to the family. It’s a great way to start the New Year.”

As of Thursday afternoon, no other babies had been born at ORMC.

ORMC Marketing Specialist Dana Lowe said the local hospital delivered 564 live births in 2013.

“At the highest point, we had 750 births one year,” she said. “Births have been down, and part of the reason is because we lost some population in the county due to industry closures.”

According to www.babycenter.com, the name Henry ranked 22 out of 100 of the most popular baby names in 2013, with 5,212 out of 1 million babies sharing the same name.

Another baby website, www.parenting.com, states that the boy name Henry is both “princely and amiable that’s perfect for anyone, from a rascally little boy to the head of a Fortune 500 company.” Henry is one of the classic American names that has become trendy in recent years.

The No. 1 ranked baby names for 2014 are Ryan and Emma, followed by Mason and Mia.
