New Year's shootings at Riverbend

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Milledgeville Police Department is investigating two different Riverbend Apartments' shooting incidents that happened early New Year's Day.

Several reported emergency calls came within a few hours both claiming shots fired behind one apartment unit.

The police were dispatched to the 111 N. Lincoln St. area of Building 8 in Riverbend at 2:40 a.m. Wednesday morning in reference to shots being fired.

Seeing no one upon arrival, the responding then canvassed the area.

“As I reached the breeze way on the south end of Building 8, a black male came out of the apartment from under the stairs with a gun in his right hand. I drew my weapon and ordered him to lay the gun down. The subject laid the gun down and began to explain what was going on,” the report said.

The man, Shemario Mitchell, stated he called 911 when he heard the gunshots.

According to the report, Mitchell then said he opened the door and “that's when he saw the gun lying on the concrete at the door” and “he picked it up to keep his young nephews and nieces from getting it.”

The report said Mitchell claimed he then stepped back inside Apt. 5E and when he came back out that's when he heard the officer yelling to put the gun down.

It turns out the serial number of the weapon, an AR-15 .223 caliber rifle, came back as stolen through the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office.

The police took a written statement from Mitchell before turning the case over to the detectives division.

About two hours later at approximately 4:22 a.m. Wednesday, another city police officer arrived at the Riverbend apartment complex in reference to multiple reports of shots fired with gunshot wounds.

The reports stated the shots came from Building 8.

Upon arrival, the responding officer “immediately went to check on the victim at apartment 8D to see what kind of condition he was in.”
