Creekside students donate items to local veterans

MILLEDGEVILLE —

Residents at Milledgeville’s Georgia War Veterans Home are bundling up with a few new articles of clothing this winter. They’re also cloaked in the warmth of a group of local elementary students who wanted to make sure these local veterans weren’t forgotten this winter.

The students are fourth- and fifth-graders from the OE program at Creekside Elementary School. Every month or so, they complete a service project as a way to give back to the community.

A recent project took them the local veterans home to show support for others who have sacrificed and supported their country.

The students came up with the project and got to work decorating containers to collect money to make it all possible. They collected more than $300, which went toward purchasing items for the veterans.

“We wanted to show our appreciation for the veterans,” said teacher Cindy English of her students’ project.

The students met after school recently to personally distribute the windbreakers, hooded coats, socks and sweats, for men and women, at the veterans home. They also got an opportunity to speak with some of the veterans who expressed their gratitude for the gifts.

Like most of his classmates, fifth-grader Justin Wallace said he enjoyed working on the project.

“I thought it was fun,” he said. “A lot of people gave me money to do this. I see the veterans are happy and it makes me happy.

Veterans like Jim Armstrong. He and a few other veterans thanked the students for their donations and took a few moments to speak with them during their recent visit. They students and veterans took photographs together and exchanged greetings.

Fifth-grader Shelby Duke said their recent visit was a fun learning opportunity.

“I thought it was fun,” she said, “and I knew that a lot of people would need warm clothes. It helps them get warm clothes for the winter.”

Caleb Aycock met a United States Air Force veteran during their visit.

“I got to meet people that served in our elite forces,” he said.

As fourth-grader Harshita Patel surmised: “It’s a way we can help the people who help us.”
