Downtown Renaissance Fellows Program selects Milledgeville

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Georgia Municipal Association (GMA), in partnership with the Georgia Cities Foundation (GCF) and the University of Georgia's Carl Vinson Institute of Government (UGA), has selected the cities of Gainesville, Milledgeville and Porterdale to participate as pilot cities for the Georgia Downtown Renaissance Fellows program.

Through the Downtown Renaissance Fellows program, an undergraduate landscape architecture student from UGA's College of Environment & Design will be assigned to work with each of the three pilot cities for a 10-week period during the summer of 2013. The participating cities will be responsible for paying at least 50 percent of the cost of the Fellowship.

The city's total cost is $1,440 for the services. GMA and GCF, through the Georgia Downtown Renaissance Partnership, will provide the remaining financial support for the program.

Each selected Downtown Renaissance Fellow will provide technical and design services for one or more specific downtown projects for the pilot city in which he or she has been assigned. Examples of potential projects include park and green space planning, corridor entrance design and streetscape design.

Each city leaves the program with improved downtown corridor entrance designs.

City support of downtown development and likelihood to implement the plans are considered during the selection process.

Milledgeville Main Street Director Carlee Schulte announced the positive news earlier this month.

“Milledgeville was chosen because of the city's support of downtown,” Schulte said April 9. “They see that's something you guys take seriously.”

A landscape architect student starts the 10-week study May 20. Additional corridor improvement costs to implement the design plan attach to the process. City Manager Barry Jarrett said the first choices lie at the Wayne and Hancock Street downtown entrances though the city will keep an open mind for other options.
