CUMMING —

A 33-year-old man who drowned in Lake Lanier over the weekend was from Atlanta, authorities said.

The man drowned Sunday afternoon on the lake just northeast of Atlanta. He was identified Monday as Lindy James Murdock of Atlanta. Authorities said he went under the water around 3 p.m. Sunday and did not resurface near the Two Mile Island chain in Forsyth County.

"He was on a float, had come off the float and went down," Sgt. Mike Burgamy of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources told The Times of Gainesville (http://bit.ly/1a7mHJf ).

Several people were on the float with him, Burgamy said.

His body was recovered late Sunday near Vann Tavern Park after about a 45-minute search by dive teams from Forsyth and Hall counties.

The cove where the man was located is about 40 feet deep in certain locations, deputies said. The man was on a float that measured 8 feet by 10 feet.

Murdock "was just out with friends, swimming and enjoying the day," Burgamy said. "It doesn't appear that foul play was involved."
