Rather than trying to fix everything that went wrong last week, the John Milledge Trojans decided to forget last Friday’s 63-0 loss to Tattnall and focus on this weekend’s homecoming game.
“You can’t build on it or do anything about it, so we said just forget about it and get ready for George Walton. We didn’t look at the film. we didn’t do anything. We just came in here and started getting ready,” said head coach Ken Johnson.
One of the biggest changes this week will be the addition all the starters who were out last week including quarterback Thomas Smith, as well as tailbacks Josh Hartzell and Robby Giovanetti who was injured in the second quarter.
“We knew coming into it that they were very powerful and without Hartzell in there who is one of our better tacklers, and Thomas Smith out, it just makes it difficult. You have to make changes. I had two guys out, but I had to replace those two guys with six different people which makes a difference. We don’t have a lot of depth and when we have to replace somebody, you have to replace 4,5, six people a times,” Johnson said.
Despite the final score, Johnson was pleased with the play by backup quarterback Derren McGiboney and backup tailback Hunter Burgamy, saying that they may even get into this week’s game because of their efforts.
“McGiboney did a great job. To start his first game against Tattnall, he did a great job. He had a lot of poise and he did some good things. He made the right reads, he just under threw it a couple times. And Burgamy came in for Hartzell and had a lot of guts and desire,” Johnson said. “McGiboney may see some playing time at quarterback. We may use Burgamy some. It’s just a process of how the game goes.”
The Trojans are returning home for the homecoming game, a week that is filled with plenty of festivities outside of football and practice.
“There's a lot of distractions, but its all part of homecoming. It’s not the Friday night that you worry about, its the other things during the week. Hopefully after today, we can focus on the game and not on the other festivities.”
With players back and the Trojans back at home, Friday’s contest at Ted S. Smith field should go smoother than last week, but the competition will be just as stiff.
“George Walton is a very good football team, they’re probably the second best team in our league right now behind Tattnall. They’ll be a very physical team. Last week we had to take some things out of the game plan because McGiboney was not able to run some of the things that we could do,” said Johnson.
“We look for them to come in here and run the split back veer. They’re going to be big up front. Defensively they’re going to run the 50 and they have three good linebackers. So we have our work cut out for us again, we just have to show a little character, a little pride and come back from last week and see what we’re made of.”
In an attempt to stop Tattnall, Johnson admitted that the team changed its defense, but intends to return to the normal 5-3 defense this week.
“ I think we changed our defense a little too much trying to stop them. I call it overcoaching and our kids didn’t fit in that scheme. We should have gone back to what we normally do and not try to do something different.”
The Trojans and Bulldogs kickoff Friday at 7:30.
