Braves relish underdog role against Tigers

For the third straight week, the Baldwin Braves will head into it’s game as the underdog and for the third straight week, it doesn’t bother them in the slightest as the Carver-Columbus Tigers come to town in search of a big non-regional win.

“We weren’t supposed to beat Troupe. We weren’t supposed to beat Peach and we got it done, and once again, we’re the underdogs. So all that does is fire up our kids and gets them ready to play. We’re just going to prepare like we always do and get ready to play football,” said Braves head coach Jesse Hicks.

One advantage that the team will have tonight that wasn’t there against Troupe and Peach is home field advantage. Hicks is hoping the fans will play a key role in the game.

“What we have to do is bring that 12th man into the stadium. They’ve(Carver-Columbus) already got two charter bus loads of fans ready to come down. Our fans don’t even have to gas up, just show up. A lot of people are saying we don’t stand a chance and I just look at it as chalkboard material.”

Freshman quarterback Roshaun Milline will remain the Braves QB as the Braves are 3-0 with him under center.

“Milline is the man and I think he gets better every week. He played some great football last week. We dropped a couple for him last week,” Hicks said.

In addition to the gains made in previous weeks, the Braves have something special planned for this week’s game.

“You may see a few twists out of our offense this week, some things that we’ve been working on. You’ll see us do some things that we haven’t done here recently,” promised Hicks.

Backup tailback Javonte Edwards had a big game last week including 80 yards in one series and Hicks expects big things from him again this week.

“We always knew he could run, but we stuck him in there and he stood up for us. It’s always good to see a kid come in there that doesn’t get a lot of reps step in and splay against good competition.”

The offense will be facing one of the top linebackers in the country in senior Jarvis Jones who has scholarship offers from Division I-A schools all over the country.

“You run right at him. He’s a big strong fast kid. You just have to scheme and put people in position where they can angle and get to him. The play a base 50 and they do a good job of it.

He’s going to do what he’s going to and we’re just going to run run formations and try and take him out of his element.”

On defense, the linebacking corp. will get a jolt in the arm as Marcus Cabiness returns to the lineup after an injury. With Cabiness, Corico Hawkins, Jamaris Cooper, the Braves have one of the top linebacking corp. in the state.

“Cabiness is back. And he’s a heck of a blitzer and that’s how we’re going to use him. When they line up in certain formations, we’re going to send him.”
