The pregame and half time festivities may have been rained out, but not even the weather could stop the Baldwin Braves Friday night.
In a scrimmage games against Wilkinson, the Baldwin Braves, lead by freshman Roshawn Milline at starting quarterback, scored two touchdowns while shutting out the Warriors to win the rivalry game.
On the first play of the game, the Baldwin defense drove back the Warriors, a series that would go three and out.
Minus a few successful plays by the Wilco offense, the Baldwin defense was dominant never letting the Warriors even into the red zone.
“Defensively I couldn’t ask for more. I think they got two first downs all night. I was real impressed with out defensive line. I’d like to see a little bit better pass rush, but it will come,” said Baldwin head coach Jesse Hicks.
Despite throwing an inteception on the posession, Milline settled down to lead the Braves to two scoring drives for 6. The first came in the second quarter. Running back Jerrico Ford got to the goaline on a ten yard run from scrimmage. On the very next play, Ford pounded it in for the Braves first touchdown of the season.
The next scoring drive came in the third quarter when Milline connected with fellow freshman Carnell Boyd for a touchdown.
“We were running a lead pass, and he threw it in the flat to Boyd who was wide open. So that’s going to be a pretty good connection between those young guys that have been playing together in middle school,” said Hicks.
Kicker Tyler Reeves redeemed himself after missing the first extra point and shot hit second try through the uprights to give Baldwin a 13-0 lead.
Due to a shortened second half, the second team did not get as many reps on offense, but Hicks was still pleased with what he saw.
The biggest question of the summer may have also been answered Friday night. While junior quarterback Calvin Harris’ health is still the wild card, Milline’s performance likely earned him the starting job next week.
“That will be determined by what happens this week. I don’t know if Calvin is ready to come back. It depends on how he feels, but right now Roshawn is our man,” said Hicks.
The Braves will open up the regular season next Friday at home against Glenn Hills. The game will start at 7:30 p.m. at Braves Field.
