The clouds were dark over head and the cool breezes throughout Lady Trojans field were atypical of a late August afternoon, but the John Milledge Lady Trojans play was reliably routine.
Solid pitching and good hitting gave the team a 3-0 victory over Brentwood and fourth win of the season.
Starting pitcher Macie Couey pitched a complete game shutout giving up just one hit while striking out 10.
“I’ve been focusing on my change up a lot and my defense behind me did their job and performed well today,” said Couey who “could have gone a few more if needed to.”
Couey also added an RBI double in the third to score Carlie O’Neal and give the Lady Trojans and early 1-0 lead.
The team scored two more in the next inning on a pair of RBI singles. After Kristen Satcher reached base on a throwing error, Brooke Underwood slapped a single to left center field and bring in the second run of the game. Courtney Maddox came up next and hit a near identical shot to left center to score Underwood.
“”Everyone stepped up. Defense is pretty sound. Everybody’s contributed,” said head coach Goran Veal
“Up and down the lineup, you can’t really pitch around anyone. It may not be the same three or four every game, but I expect us to hit.”
With Couey pitching lights out and the defense backing her up, the Lady Trojans sailed the rest of the way to victory.
Veal was happy to see his team perform as well as he knows they’re capable of playing.
“We’re playing a lot better. We’re looking like the team that we figured we had. This is the team we’ve been looking for. The key is to keep it up because we’ve got a long season and a lot of games,” said Veal.
The lone scare came in the bottom of the sixth when Satcher fouled a pitch off her left ankle and immediately fell to the ground. However Satcher was not down long and after brushing herself off knocked a single down the left field line.
“She’s alright. That’s just a day at the office. You have to take that in stride, rub a little dirt on it and keep playing,” said Veal.
The team will take a three game winning streak into this weekend’s Southern Pines tournament in Dublin. The team will play two pool play games on Friday and then double elimination games on Saturday.
“I just want to play consistent, make our routine outs and things. We just want to go down there, play hard, try to prevent anyone from getting hurt and then prepare for next week,” said Veal.
