The inaugural Bert Williams Junior Bulldogs Football Camp was held this week at Georgia Military College.
The camp, for players ages 7 to 13, ran Monday through Friday ending with the Iron Pup Challenge where players had the opportunity to show their skills and compete for prizes in a series of ten football-related
activities.
GMC head football coach Bert Williams is pleased with how the camp has gone so far.
“There’s a lot of good little ball players around here,” Williams said. “We wanted to get them out here and work with them and just really stress having fun playing the game and also getting better in the fundamentals of the game.”
The camp has been in Williams’ mind for the last couple of years and he hopes to see it continue to grow in the future.
“We’ve got 39 kids. 40 was our goal – to hit that, we thought, would be a very good first year number,” Williams said. “We were a little late getting the word out about the camp, but we felt good about the amount of interest and I think next year when we continue to do this it will grow some.”
Everyone involved agreed that it was a successful week of football.
Chad Freeman, a 12-year-old Milledgeville resident, said he begged his mom to let him come.
“It’s been awesome. It’s a lot of exercise, but I’ve learned a lot,” he said. “I learned how to throw the football better and be a cornerback like I always wanted to be.”
Many players seemed to enjoy the end of the day the most when the campers split into six teams and play touch football games according to age group. Even the coaches got in on the action as
quarterbacks.
“We really wanted to emphasize sportsmanship and working together,” Williams said. “It’s been a great week.”
The kids all agree with that.
“I love it, it’s so fun,” 12-year-old Timothy Brown said. “The coaches are very, very exciting and fun. I’ve learned a lot from them and the fundamentals of football.”
