Baldwin gets a big victory

Caleb Scoggins came from behind the plate to pitch Thursday, leading Baldwin High School to an 18-3 blasting of Northeast of Macon in a four-inning, mercy rule victory.

Scoggins gave up two runs on one hit over his three innings of work, striking out two and walking two. T.J. Osbourne came on in relief, giving up one unearned run in one inning, striking out two.

“Caleb gave us some much-needed inning tonight,” BHS head coach Donnie Coburn said after the win. “He pitched really well for his first start of the year. We came into this game needing somebody to step up, and Caleb did that. Add in T.J.’s great fourth inning, and we had pretty good day on the mound.”

And an even better day at the plate. The Braves scored 18 runs on 11 hits. Chris Bradshaw led the way, going 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and two RBIs. Trevor Boyer went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Tyler Jump went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Brandon Thomas, Braxton Hurt, Adrian Rollerson, Scoggins and Calvin Harris each added a hit apiece.

“It’s never too late to see the bats come alive,” Coburn said. “For the last two games, we’ve been hitting the ball hard up and down the lineup. Against Putnam we had 10 hits and against Northeast we had 11. That’s pretty good for a two-game stretch. Hopefully we’re peaking at the right time.

Northeast plated one in the second, one in the third and one in fourth. Baldwin scored three in the first, five in the second, eight in the third and two in the fourth to cap the dominant win.

“We needed that win,” Coburn said. “But then again, the kids have never dropped their heads. They’ve fought through adversity. They haven’t given up. That’s the mark of a solid team.”
