The final score looked like it should have been from a football game Wednesday, and the Baldwin High School varsity baseball team fell to Putnam County 17-12.
The Braves held a 10-8 advantage going into the top of the seventh, but the War Eagles pushed nine runners across the plate and held BHS to just two runs in the bottom of the frame to clinch the Baldwin loss.
“We’re working hard, and these guys are showing improvement,” BHS head coach Donnie Coburn said. “We didn’t get a win today, but we put ourselves in the position where we could have. We are a young team, and any time you have the chance to win you are happy.”
Chris Bradshaw started the game, lasting just three innings. Thomas Calloway, Braxton Hurt and Ian Verbal came on in relief, with Hurt being credited with the loss.
“Neither team pitched very well today, and in the end it came down to who go the break at the right time,” Coburn said. “It turned out it was Putnam tonight.”
The War Eagles went up early, scoring three runs over the first two innings. Baldwin scored two in the fourth to cut the lead to one, but Putnam extended its lead to four with five runs in the fifth. BHS plated eight in the bottom of the sixth, but the ninth inning proved to be too much.
Thomas Calloway and Ian Verbal led BHS at the plate, both picking up two hits on the day. The Braves had 10 hits over seven innings.
“We actually hit the ball really well today,” Coburn said. “We’ve been in a bad slump at the plate as a team, and picking up 12 runs on 10 hits was big for us. Every man in the lineup had a hit, so maybe we’re starting to break into a rhythm.”
The Braves return to action Friday, hitting the road to take on Northside-Warner Robins. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
