Over the past few months, downtown Milledgeville has been transformed into a beach scene, a celebration of patriotism and returned to its historic and artistic roots — all through the downtown community effort of First Friday events. Next week, Milledgeville’s monthly installment of First Friday will bring the tastes of the town together featuring food samples from local restaurants.
If you haven’t checked out a First Friday program or activity yet, next week’s Taste of Milledgeville is a prime opportunity.
While First Friday is free of charge for everyone, tickets for next week’s taste event are $1 each with funds going to support Main Street and First Friday efforts. Among other projects, Main Street funding helps to assist local businesses through its façade match program, which awards grants for downtown locations to upgrade the outside of their businesses. These funding efforts also support the Tuesday farmer’s market, Milledgeville Marketplace, along with other sponsorship endeavors including the Deep Roots festival, which brings thousands of visitors into town every October.
The First Friday effort, which has grown a steady stream of regular participants since its inception last year, is an opportunity to enjoy the camaraderie of downtown merchants and the community’s rich arts and cultural history. A lot of time and a number of hands help to make it possible also, and we must not overlook the spirit of the largely volunteer effort that is putting it all together.
First Fridays are an extension of the tourism development that already exists in Milledgeville, yet it is also a celebration of the aspects of the community that make it so unique not only to visitors but for locals as well. Take time out Friday to venture downtown and see what it’s all about. You’ll likely discover something new about the local community, and just may stay a while longer and enjoy it.
