Marker dedication keeps Boddie High legacy alive

MILLEDGEVILLE —

Carrying with them found memories of their high school days, alumni of J.F. Boddie High recently gathered with community leaders to pay homage to their alma mater. Through months of behind the scenes work by several alumni, former classmates joined city and county leaders late last month for the unveiling of a historic marker in the school’s honor.

Alumni procured the marker and gained clearance from the board of education for its placement in an effort to preserve their high school history. Through this effort, however, Boddie’s place in Baldwin County history is also preserved for generations to come and all to share.

The school was named for Dr. Julian Franklin Boddie Sr. who distinguished himself in the community by becoming the only African-American medical doctor that served Baldwin County and surrounding communities. The school was led by Joseph Graham, the first African-American principal in Baldwin County.

The monument that now sits at the Orchard Hill Road address designates the current site as the original location of the first high school in Baldwin County that included the 12th grade. Boddie was an extension of Carver High School, which went to the 11th grade, satisfying academic requirements prior to 1957.

As alumni spoke at the recent dedication, it was evident that the principals they learned from teachers and staff at Boddie carried over with them to adulthood, building a foundation for their lives.

The newly established historic marker at the site of J.F. Boddie High is yet another example of the impact of education on Baldwin County, and the marker’s placement solidifies Boddie High as a vital role in shaping leaders in the local community. Now future generations can know the impact of Boddie High on the local community and learn about the school history. Its place in local history is secure through the efforts of those who helped to make this recent event possible.
