Alice Fay obit

MILLEDGEVILLE — November 14, 1926 – January 25, 2013

Alice Fay, formerly of Milledgeville,  died peacefully at her residence of Belvedere Commons after suffering a stroke on Friday, January 25, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Louis E. Fay III; her sister, Anne M. Awtrey; her son, Louis E. Fay IV; and her parents, Robert K. Awtrey and Isabel M. Warren. She is survived by her brother, Robert K. Awtrey Jr.; four children, Anne M. Fay, Robert A. Fay, John F. Fay and S. Delia Fay; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Alice studied chemistry at Radcliffe College and University of California Berkeley. She spent her career teaching at colleges and universities in Ames, Iowa; Detroit, Mich., Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Kenya in Africa; Trinidad, West Indies; Greenville and Anderson, S.C. and finally at Milledgeville. During her later years she and her husband spent their summers in South America collecting ferns.

A member of the Episcopal Church for all of her adult life, Alice was ordained a deacon in 1995. She remained active in the church up to her death. She was also a lifetime member of the NAACP. She knit as a hobby for most of her life. She lost her sight in 2003 and spent the last nine years of her life completely blind. Two months before her 84th birthday, she announced that she wanted to learn how to sing and promptly signed up for voice lessons. Singing was her great joy for the last two years of her life.

Alice’s funeral will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Milledgeville, Georgia, on Saturday, February 9 at 10 a.m. Bishop Keith Whitmore of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta presiding. Her ashes will be inurned at the church next to those of her late husband. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the NAACP or the Episcopal Relief & Development Fund (earmarked for Liberia).
