Jacob Goldstein

MILLEDGEVILLE — The death of Jacob L. Goldstein, 89, occurred Friday, January 11, 2013. Graveside services were  held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 13, at West View Cemetery.

Mr. Goldstein was born in Milledgeville in 1923 to the parents Celia and Abe Goldstein. He attended Georgia Military High School and Georgia Military Junior College. He also attended the University of Georgia graduating with a bachelor of business administration.

He served as a captain in Patton’s Third Army during World War II. He served four years receiving two Bronze Stars and the Combat Infantry Badge. He has been associated with C. Goldstein and Sons (a department store and wholesale business) for more than 60 years, serving as president.

He was co-founder and member of the board of First Federal Savings

and Loan of Milledgeville. Later he became chairman of the B.B. & T. Bank Board. Mr. Goldstein was a board member of Temple Beth Israel in Macon, former chairman of Merchant’s Committee for Chamber of Commerce, past member of planning and zoning commission, past president of Milledgeville Kiwanis Club, where he had perfect attendance for 52 years, and was a past lt. governor of Kiwanis Club International, past state drug abuse chairman, Kiwanis Club International, past president Georgia Military College Alumni Association, former vice chair of Georgia Military College Board of Trustees, emeritus member of Georgia Military College Board of Trustees, past president of Milledgeville County Club, past member of the Baldwin County Industrial Authority, past chairman of Governor’s Private Industry Council, past member of the Democratic State Committee, former chairman of the Baldwin County Democratic Committee, past director of Georgia Association of Democratic, past chairman of the Milledgeville Public Facilities Authority, chaired numerous charitable campaigns. Member of Masonic Order, Scottish Rite, Shrine and American Legion, member of Anti Defamation League Board, advisor to the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust, co-founder of Harriet’s Closet, which provides items for patients undergoing cancer treatment, just to mention a few of his many involvements.

Mr. Goldstein was, however, very committed to GMC for which he and his wife, Maxine, were recognized in 2005 for their legacy gift with the naming of the Goldstein Center for the Performing Arts. His on-going support and dedication to excellence continues to impact GMC in meaningful ways.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Harriet Goldstein Greenhut; his brother, I.M. “Sonny” Goldstein; and his, sister Mary G. Stone.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Maxine Shapiro Goldstein; a daughter, Marcia Goldstein;  gandchildren: Elysa Greenwald, Fred Stein, Melissa Greenhut and Scott Greenhut; great-grandchildren, Ian Greenwald, Rachel Greenwald, Tovar Stein and Delaney Stein.
