Joy Thornton, 73, of Okeechobee passed away March 12, 2013, at the Hamrick Home. She was born January 7, 1940, in Middlesboro, Ky.,to the late Amos and Emily (Beaty) Sweet. She married Edward Thornton on September 27, 1957.
She came to Okeechobee from Atlanta in 1986. She was a homemaker, volunteered at a hospital in Illinois, was past secretary of the Board of Trustees for the First United Methodist Church of Okeechobee as well as a member of the Okeechobee County Citizens Advisory Board at which time she helped initiate the recycling program in Okeechobee.
Mrs. Thornton is survived by her husband, Edward Thornton; daughter, Sharon Raulerson (Larry) of Ft. Pierce; sons, Richard Thornton of Fargo, N.D. and John Thornton (Sheri) of Milledgeville, Ga.; grandson, Christopher Sibley of Hopkins of Minn.; and granddaughter, Melissa Reagan of Milledgeville.
Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 30, 2013, at First United Methodist Church of Okeechobee.
