Joseph Bryce Candler

MILLEDGEVILLE — Joseph Bryce Candler, 72, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2014, after a long battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).  At his death, Joe was living in Hoschton, having moved there to be closer to his daughter, Tassi.

Joe was born on April 6, 1942 in Virginia, but grew up in Tucker, graduating from Tucker High School in the class of 1960 After completing his military service as an MP he moved to Milledgeville and began working with Allstate Insurance, he became the youngest person at that time ever offered his own agency with Allstate. He continued to build his insurance agency over the next 30 years and was very successful because of his outgoing nature and his treatment of his customers as part of his extended family. He continued this expansion of his business until his retirement and transfer of the agency to his friend, Bruce Dempster. During that time, and continuing thereafter, Joe, on his own (Candler Land), and in conjunction with his good friend, Henry Sheppard (Heritage Land and Timber), bought and sold thousands of acres of timber, residential and commercial real estate and developed multiple real estate subdivisions and commercial projects throughout middle Georgia.

Joe lived in Forest Lake Village on Lake Sinclair for more than 30 years and was an avid sportsman, enjoying golf, hunting and fishing throughout middle Georgia, the Georgia coast and in Nebraska where he also was involved in real estate developments. He loved being outside and one of his favorite hobbies was vegetable gardening — always willing to share the produce, especially his prized tomatoes — with his friends and neighbors.

Joe became an active member of Hardwick Christian Church, later Northridge Christian, before moving in 2011 to Winder to be closer to his family.  In Winder he became a member of the First Baptist Church of Winder and was baptized there.  Joe was especially proud of his recognition for 10 years of sobriety, his association with the AA chapter in Eatonton and later with Celebrate Recovery at First Baptist Winder.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, H. B. and Georgia Candler, and his brother, Charles Daniel (Danny) Candler. He is survived by his cherished daughter, Tassi Candler Schroll (Derek); his granddaughters, Emma Kate Schroll and Anna Claire Schroll; his devoted sister, Becky Hembree (John); his brother, Sam Candler (Sandy); his sister-in-law, Gerry Candler; his beloved aunt, Jean Napier; Juli Waddell (David), the mother of Tassi and caregiver of Joe; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at Tom W. Wages Funeral Home, Lawrenceville Chapel, 120 Scenic Highway, Lawrenceville 30046 on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at 1:30 p.m., with services to begin at 3. Pastor Mike Walston of First Baptist Church of Winder will officiate. Burial will be private at Floral Hill Memorial Gardens.

Those wishing may make memorial contributions to Celebrate Recovery, First Baptist Church of Winder, 625 Jefferson Highway, Winder, 30680.

Williams Funeral Home in Milledgeville may be contacted for additional information.
