Betty Jane Walko Elias obit

MILLEDGEVILLE — Mrs. Betty Jane Walko Elias, 88, passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2013. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 7, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Bradley and the Rev. Jason Ellerbee officiating. Burial was held at 2 p.m. Monday at Greenlawn Cemetery in Waycross with Tim Johns officiating.

Mrs. Elias was born July 13, 1924, in Buffalo, N.Y., and had lived most of her life in Waycross, Ga., moving to Milledgeville in 2003.

She was the widow of Irving Elias, and the daughter of the late Emil A. and Doris Scott Walko.

Mrs. Elias had worked for the Monroe Brothers in Waycross for 37 years as a bookkeeper and together with Irv, taught Square Dancing throughout South Georgia. They traveled from Florida to North Carolina for Irv to call square dances, and made many friends along the way.

She was an active member of First Christian Church in Waycross and was an elder. She had been a member of First Baptist Church in Milledgeville since 2003.

Survivors include her daughter Pam Elias Johns (Ronald) of Milledgeville; a son, Drew Elias (Kathy) of Montgomery City, Mo.; a niece whom she raised as her own, Doris Crawford (Kevin) of Blackshear; seven grandchildren including Tim Johns (Debbie) of Birmingham, Ala., Tara Johns of Dahlonega, Jeff Elias (Diane), Jill Dian (Nick), and Adrienne Elias, all of St. Paul, Minn.; and nine great-grandchildren; a niece, Darleen Jiggens; and nephews, Chris Batie and Pat Batie.

A special thanks goes to the staff of Savannah Court Assisted Living Community, especially Melba Minter, Brenda, Curtisa, Collette, Ester, Jovon, Michelle, Diane, Linda, Ramona, and Millie Day for their love and the tender care they gave our Mother.

Donations may be made to Serenity Hospice Care or the donor’s favorite charity. The family received friends Sunday from 2 until 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Milledgeville.
